Online Journal Showcases Dreamers’ Songs

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

by Nancy Mosher
The newest issue of deLuge, an online literary and arts journal related to dreams, features an anthology of original music, inspired by the archetypal journey. Published by North of Eden, an organization devoted to Archetypal Dreamwork, deLuge traditionally features poems, personal essays, and visual art inspired by dreams. This is the first issue featuring original songs, adding a new dimension to the arts journal concept.

This issue of deLuge contains 12 original songs, written and performed by 10 dreamers. Some had never written songs before. Others, such as accomplished Vermont musicians Jeremiah McLane, Susannah Blachly, and Bob Murray, are bringing the message of their dreams to life in evocative new ways.

Each song reflects the raw and intensely individual journey of Archetypal Dreamwork, which challenges dreamers to discard their understanding of themselves and enter into an exploration of the unknown through their dreams. Many describe a discovery of their own relationship with the Divine, as revealed through their dream journeys.

Jane Mackenzie’s song “Untitled” is a striking example of the way dreamwork unleashes creative expression. Jane, a fledging songwriter, sings her story with haunting grace and simplicity. Accompanied by soft bluesy piano arpeggios, “Untitled” describes how Jane’s fear, “like a shroud, like a veil” becomes the gate that can set her free. As the song unfolds, we can hear the transformation of the sorrow in Jane’s richly textured voice, as she describes lifting her “voice to the sky.” The song closes with these lyrics:

There’s angel’s breath beneath my wings,
Lifting me in song,
Soaring higher, riding in His arms.

Although this song’s story is uniquely Jane’s, the way music can take us out of the mind prisons in which so many of us live is universal. It is a gift to be able to hear Jane lead us through her journey from fear, through song, to the loving arms of God.

Jim Goss offers another manifestation of the profound spiritual connection that can arise from dreamwork. His song “From Within Me,” with its urgent guitar rhythms and echoing harmonies, is lyrically simple, describing his devotion and humility as he seeks the divine connection deep within himself.

From within me. From where I cannot see. From within me. From where my Father speaks
Make me weightless. I have no more need for right.  Please turn me slowly. Turn my face toward the light

Jim’s musical artistry is impressive. His vocals, both precise and flexible, weave beautifully with his highly skilled guitar work. The song is beautifully arranged. Jim’s closing guitar work evokes the breadth and scope of the long journey into what Carl Jung describes as “the spirit of the depths.”

deLuge also contains a rich array of writing and artwork related to dreams. The founders of Archetypal Dreamwork, Marc Bregman and Christa Lancaster, share an excerpt from their new book Flesh Off the Bone: Dream Descent through Past Life Trauma, which explores their own breathtaking dream journeys through the catacombs of the unconscious to discover profound healing, a newfound love for each other, and a deep connection with the Divine.

Music has a way of penetrating our thorny protective exteriors and opening us to what is most true inside us. This diverse group of songwriters, exploring their own deepest truths and willing to share the most vulnerable parts of themselves, brings us a rare and visceral musical experience, and enlightens us about the courage and commitment it takes to open to the knowledge of our own deepest selves.

Your help needed in dream survey about The Departed

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

Author Gillian Holloway is conducting research on dream visitations by those who are departed.  Gillian says: “One of the hallmarks of the visitation dream: when you awaken from it, you have a powerful feeling that you have just been with the person. Over the years, I’ve been able to collect stories like this one, and to compare the similarities and differences. Visitation dreams come to believers and non believers, to people of all faiths and all ages. They are often punctuated by family members shared experiences, waking life coincidences that appear to follow up the dream.” Have you been visited by someone you’ve lost in dreams?  If so, take a few minutes to complete Gillian’s online survey.

Scientists Reconstruct Brains’ Visions Into Digital Video — Video Dreams May be Next!

Saturday, October 8th, 2011

UC Berkeley scientists have developed a system to capture visual activity in human brains and reconstruct it as digital video clips. Eventually, this process will allow you to record and reconstruct your own dreams on a computer screen.

They used three different subjects for the experiments—incidentally, they were part of the research team because it requires being inside a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging system for hours at a time. The subjects were exposed to two different groups of Hollywood movie trailers as the fMRI system recorded the brain’s blood flow through their brains’ visual cortex.

The readings were fed into a computer program in which they were divided into three-dimensional pixels units called voxels (volumetric pixels). This process effectively decodes the brain signals generated by moving pictures, connecting the shape and motion information from the movies to specific brain actions. As the sessions progressed, the computer learned more and more about how the visual activity presented on the screen corresponded to the brain activity.

After recording this information, another group of clips was used to reconstruct the videos shown to the subjects. The computer analyzed 18 million seconds of random YouTube video, building a database of potential brain activity for each clip. From all these videos, the software picked the one hundred clips that caused a brain activity more similar to the ones the subject watched, combining them into one final movie. Although the resulting video is low resolution and blurry, it clearly matched the actual clips watched by the subjects.  Read more….

One Earth, One Dream comes to Portland, Oregon

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Currently in development for live performance and studio recording in late Fall 2011, ONE EARTH/ONE DREAM will put professional writers, composers, and performers at the disposal of dreamers from then and now, here and there, so they can share their actual dreams of the healing and renewal of ourselves and our connections with the worlds of animals, our ancestors, and the earth. Check the website for previews and updates. Send us a dream at dreams@dreamslanding.org

Download the flyer.

Dreams Landing is an ensemble of writers, composers, artists, performers, consultants, and dreamers based in Portland, Oregon, who are convinced that the rejection of the invisible, transcendent realm of myth and dream has impoverished and endangered our world.

Their mission is the creation, performance and distribution of works and events which demonstrate the possibility of healing and renewal through access to mythology, the dream, the shared story and the arts. Specifically, they are working to bring together practitioners in psychology, mythology, spiritual traditions and the literary, visual and performing arts to offer audiences in the metropolitan Portland, Oregon area, the Pacific Northwest, and the wide world beyond a unique, interactive performance-centered educational experience.

The conflict, division, and seemingly unresolveable polarization we see around us every day come partly from our lost access to the realm of mystery and transcendence, where we experience our connectedness and our mutual creative possibility, despite all appearances. We are dedicated to devising innovative ways of experiencing together the images that come to us from this lost domain, so the story of renewal we so badly need can begin to take shape in the outer world. Online Perspectives in Lucid Dreaming — coming in September

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Wake Up! You’re Dreaming
PSIBERDREAMING CONFERENCE 2011: PERSPECTIVES ON LUCID DREAMING

This year’s tenth annual PsiberDreaming Conference, scheduled to run online for two weeks from Sunday, September 25 through Sunday, October 9, is themed for a discussion of lucidity–not just lucid dreaming, but lucid living, anda larger look at the variety of meanings lucidity implies.

Be aware that, if lucid dreaming has been a hot topic over the months since last year’s hit movie Inception, lucidity has been a hot topic in the dream community since The International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD) began. Thus the number and quality of IASD presenters for this year’s conference are extraordinary.

IASD includes dream researchers, therapists, teachers, dream-sharing group members and students of dream. It was founded over twenty years ago by longtime dream practitioners.

The IASD PsiberDreaming Conference offers papers and workshops online, with lively discussion threads for registrants. PsiberDreaming 2011 will also provide what has become standard conference fare: dream contests, where participants can test their psi dreaming skills; the PsiberDreaming Art Gallery; A Place for Dreams, where registrants can share their dreams; dream chats; and the ever-popular Outer Inn, for hanging out in cyberspace.

PsiberDreaming is an experience no dreamer should miss. Those who are not yet IASD members have an additional incentive, since all first-time members who join between now and October 9 will receive a FREE PASS to the PsiberDreaming Conference.
