Books on Dreams and Creativity

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Dreams naturally lend themselves towards creative expression. Here are my favorite books dealing with dreams and creativity:

Garfield, Patricia. Pathway to Ecstasy, The Way of the Dream Mandala. 1979, New York, Prentice-Hall Press.
If you can find this book (it’s currently out of print), it will be well worth your while. Garfield uses the mandala, a symbol of wholeness, as a starting point for connecting with both the creativity and sensuality inherent in dreams.

Mellick, Jill. The Natural Artistry of Dreams: Creative Ways to Bring the Wisdom of Dreams to Waking Life. 1996, Berkeley, CA, Conari Press.
Mellick pioneered the idea of using creative medium as a way of connecting with and interpreting dreams. (Read an interview with Jill Mellick here)

Mellick, Jill. The Art of Dreaming: Tools for Creative Dream Work. 2001, Berkeley, CA, Conari Press.
Further work with creativity and dreams.

Tonay, Veronica. The Creative Dreamer: Using Your Dreams to Unlock Your Creativity. 1995, Berkeley, CA, Celestial Arts Publishing.
Tonay uses dreams as a springboard for inspiring creativity in waking life. Consider using this book with her companion workbook, The Creative Dreamer’s Journal.
