The Muppet Christmas Carol
(seriously!) is an excellent demonstratio
n
of how dreams can be communication between the conscious and the unconscious,
and help shape a person's life. Scrooge, who arguably was living permanently
in his shadow, dreamed the three ghosts visited him. The dreams revealed the
childhood isolation that shaped his character (ghost of Christmas Past), the
type of person that he was (Present) and what might happen if he didn't restore
his real personality (Future). There is a pivotal moment in the graveyard
with the Ghost of Christmas Future, when Scrooge finally has to admit to the
sort of person he is, and then he resolves to change. This film is better
than any other Christmas Carol film I've seen at bringing out the meaning
of the story. (Oh, and it is also quite funny!). Fictional characters are
often based on real life, and I wonder if Dickens ever had a dream like this,
or knew someone who did.
